Bull Sessions (10/3/2023): Thrift Savings Plan

Looking back on a very well-received session we did on the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) back in March 2014. Special Guest Ty Hughes joins us to share some perspective on the performance and available opportunity on this retirement plan.

In this October 3, 2023 Bull Sessions webinar, Mark Robertson and Ken Kavula, co-founders of Manifest Investing, welcomed Ty Hughes, a military veteran and volunteer with the D.C. metro Regional Chapter, to discuss the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and broader retirement planning strategies. The discussion opened with market updates showing general investor struggles, as reflected in the Wilshire 5000 and Value Line Arithmetic Average metrics, alongside updates on the Groundhog Challenge investment competition. Robertson and Kavula emphasized the importance of long-term perspective and "appropriate shrugging" when facing market downturns, referencing their own best small companies strategy which has experienced two difficult years but maintains strong historical performance since adopting a George Nicholson-inspired approach in 2015.

The session highlighted encouraging trends in retirement savings awareness, particularly among younger generations like Gen Z who are setting aside higher percentages of income for retirement than their predecessors. Using data from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, the speakers noted that while only 38% of baby boomers feel they have saved adequately for retirement, there is measurable progress in plan participation and contribution rates across generations. The presenters emphasized that the TSP represents an outstanding opportunity for federal employees and military personnel, and praised improvements in retirement plan accessibility and reduced costs compared to decades past, setting the stage for deeper exploration of TSP-specific strategies and long-term investing principles based on fundamental analysis.
