April Roundtable and Class: Lessons from Giants: What Investors Can Learn from Stan Musial and Ted Williams

The program will be a special double event beginning at 7:30 PM EDT with a class entitled Lessons from Giants: What Investors Can Learn from Stan Musial and Ted Williams. It will feature Mark Robertson and Ken Kavula discussing life-long practices and beliefs that will help lead investors to well-balanced, profitable portfolios. Learn how these baseball greats can keep your investing behavior headed in a positive direction.

At 8:30 PM EDT, Ken and Mark will begin the traditional monthly Roundtable Program that so many of you have come to enjoy. Besides Mark and Ken, the Roundtable portion of the session will welcome Cy Lynch from Atlanta, Hugh McManus from Pasadena and Candace Baker from the St. Louis area. That’s five presenters with five interesting stock stories to present.

It only takes a single registration for the whole session and you can enter at either start time, or at any time during either presentation, to catch the class and/or the Roundtable.

The April 25 edition of the BetterInvesting Mid-Michigan Chapter/Manifest Investing Roundtable will be co-sponsored by the BetterInvesting St. Louis Chapter.

This April 2023 Investing Roundtable, hosted by Ken Kavula and Mark Robertson with special guests Candice Baker and Kevin Gillogli, opened with a special educational program honoring St. Louis Cardinals legend Stan Musial and connecting baseball wisdom to investment principles. The session explored how great hitters like Stan Musial and Ted Williams applied discipline, practice, and selectivity to achieve excellence, drawing parallels to successful investing. Mark Robertson highlighted Musial's career accomplishments, including his Hall of Fame status and 22 seasons with the Cardinals, while emphasizing his willingness to learn from peers and competitors—a practice comparable to investment club decision pods discussed in "Thinking in Bets" by Annie Duke.

The core investment lesson centered on Warren Buffett's application of Ted Williams' hitting philosophy to stock selection. Using Williams' strike zone analysis, the presentation illustrated how successful investors should be selective rather than attempting to capitalize on every opportunity. Ken Kavula emphasized the critical importance of patience and focus, cautioning against bloated portfolios with 40-50 stocks and warning against speculative investments in unprofitable companies. The session stressed three key principles for investment success: practice, patience, and discipline, arguing that a focused portfolio of quality, profitable companies significantly outperforms scattered, speculative investing strategies.

The roundtable underscored the parallel between baseball excellence and investment club methodology, demonstrating that both require careful decision-making, continuous learning from experienced practitioners, and the discipline to pass on mediocre opportunities while waiting for the truly exceptional ones.
