Mark Robertson, Ken Kavula, and Cy Lynch hosted the March 2022 Investing Roundtable, the latest in a series running since 2010. The event focused on celebrating a time-honored tradition of the Modern Investment Club movement: aiming to beat the market by 5 percentage points. The speakers reported that their tracking portfolio has achieved a 17.6% internal rate of return since July 2010, compared to 12.5% for the Wilshire 5000 Index, resulting in a relative return of 5.1 percentage points—exceeding their target. The portfolio, containing approximately 80 positions, is tracked through mirroring investments where each stock selection is paired with a simultaneous $1,000 investment in the Wilshire 5000 benchmark. The discussion highlighted how the Better Investing methodology tends to underperform in extremely hot markets but outperform during downturns, with recent volatility and market challenges contributing to improved relative performance. Key positions discussed include Microsoft (five-time selection worth $79,000 from $5,000 invested), EPAM (seven-time selection), Cognizant (15 selections), Costco, and Amazon. The roundtable also addressed portfolio holdings and candidate stocks for consideration, emphasizing the methodology's focus on identifying quality companies at reasonable prices.
